Get Tern.

The Mac app and the terminal UI share one daemon, so install either or both. Updates come through Homebrew; the app also tells you when there's a new one.

Mac app

macOS 12 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. The app contains the daemon; it works without the CLI.

brew install --cask shubham-1994/tern/tern-desktop
Download Tern.dmg 20 MB

CLI and terminal UI

macOS and Linux (x86-64 and ARM64), FreeBSD (x86-64). One static binary; it needs only git.

brew install shubham-1994/tern/tern
curl -fsSL https://tern.build/install.sh | sh
The first time you open the app, macOS may say it can't check it: Tern isn't notarized by Apple yet. On macOS 15 and later, go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Open Anyway; on macOS 12–14, right-click Tern in Applications ▸ Open. Or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tern.app.

Update and remove

  • Update: brew upgrade shubham-1994/tern/tern and brew upgrade --cask shubham-1994/tern/tern-desktop, or run the script again.
  • After updating, tern kill-server restarts the daemon on the new version. Running sessions stop; worktrees and files stay.
  • Remove: brew uninstall --cask tern-desktop and brew uninstall tern. Tern keeps its state, settings and worktrees in ~/.tern; delete it to remove those too.
